Around November through December and April through May, some humpback whales and Orca are sighted very close inshore on their way to breed in the southern oceans.

The Bay of Islands is an area where many pods of dolphins of different species are seen. It is not recommended to swim with the dolphins other than using the 'dolphin watch' companies operating from the area.
